How do I get an FBI background check for a Spain student visa?
For a Spanish student visa longer than 180 days you need a fingerprint-based FBI Identity History Summary, and state or local police certificates are not accepted in its place. Applying direct to the FBI costs about $18; an FBI-approved Channeler costs more but commonly returns results in 1-3 business days instead of weeks. The check then needs an apostille from the US Department of State and a sworn Spanish translation, and it must be less than 6 months old when you apply.
Why a state background check won't work
This catches people out every year. A state police clearance or a local sheriff's letter is not a substitute: consulates ask specifically for the FBI Identity History Summary, issued federally and based on fingerprints. The Consulate General of Spain in San Francisco states plainly that state and local certificates are rejected.
Some consulates additionally ask for state-level checks on top of the FBI one, so read your own consulate's checklist rather than assuming. What no consulate accepts is a state check instead of the FBI check.

What happens after it arrives
Two more steps, and the order matters. First the apostille from the US Department of State in Washington DC, because the FBI check is a federal document. Then a sworn translation into Spanish that covers the apostille as well as the check itself. Translating before apostilling means paying twice.
Keep an eye on the clock: the certificate cannot be more than 6 months old at your visa appointment, so starting absurdly early can be as unhelpful as starting late.
