Applying from United KingdomUpdated 17 July 2026

How long does a Spanish student visa take from the UK?

From BLS appointment to decision is legally up to 1 month for a complete application, but commonly runs 4-8 weeks. The part people underestimate is before the appointment: the ACRO certificate, apostille and sworn translation chain takes another 4-8 weeks on standard services. Realistically, start the process 3 to 4 months before your course begins, and remember applications open at most a few months before the start date while requiring at least 2 months' lead.

The two clocks

Clock one is document prep: ACRO (up to 20 working days standard), then FCDO apostille (~10 working days), then sworn translation (days). These run sequentially because each step needs the previous one's output. Clock two starts at your BLS appointment: the consulate's decision window. Total both and you get the 3-4 month recommendation.

Ways the timeline slips

  • Ordering the emailed ACRO instead of postal, which can't be apostilled (restart)
  • Translating before apostilling, which means paying and waiting twice
  • No BLS slots for weeks in summer, book before your documents are even ready
  • An incomplete file at the appointment, which resets the decision clock or leads to refusal
  • Booking flights before the visa is granted; the passport is held during processing

Streamline the whole process

Visado puts every step in the right order for your course date and walks you through them one at a time. Nothing missed, nothing late.

Frequently asked

Can I pay to speed up the Spanish consulate's decision?

No. You can speed up your document prep with premium services, but the consular decision window is fixed and cannot be expedited.

When should I start my Spain student visa process?

3 to 4 months before your course starts. The visa application itself must be submitted at least 2 months before.

Can I travel while the visa is processing?

Your passport stays with the consulate during processing, so plan not to travel internationally in that window.
